MY JOURNEY TO SURVIVE
I spent 14 years as a binge eater and drinker. Food was my anti-depressant and drinking came with the good, the bad, and the ugly. Well, it all caught up to me the day I was diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Instead of doing something about it, I took my prescribed medications and continued with my horrible habits. In 2012, my doctor found a lump in my throat, following a post car accident check-up. Long story short, I was diagnosed with throat cancer.
Reality had hit me with all the subtlety of a jack hammer. I knew, at the age of 32, I was too young to die. On July 1st, 2013, I began my journey. I actually spent my first 4th of July in the gym instead drinking and partying with friends. Giving up my old habits, and life style, literally saved my life. Following surgery, and treatment, I made a promise to myself never to forget that I am a survivor. Not only have I beaten cancer, I no longer have diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. In fact, I have lost 21% body fat & over 50lbs.

THE ROAD TO COMPETING
I didn't start this journey to compete. A year ago, I actually told someone ‘there is no way I could ever do that'’. My 1st 12 weeks was clearly focused on eating clean, putting an end to the binge drinking, and losing some weight. My goal was to get control of my diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol (I blame the bacon addiction).
In 12 weeks, I was a whole new person. I learned portion control and how to make healthy choices. I had finally grasped healthy eating habits regardless of environment, social setting, or emotional state. I had truly adapted and was making this a life style. I wasn’t depriving myself, either. I still get to eat some damn good food. I can still indulge, but always in moderation.
Competing has become an added bonus. When you take control of your health, you get to dictate your results. You can lose weight, drop body fat, and improve, or even overcome, chronic health issues. It's not about being fit, athletic, or even rocking a 6 pack. It's about giving your body exactly what it needs, because this is the only one you get!
